My HAMMOND family is currently documented back to John HAMMOND of Virginia, born about 1685. John is believed to have been the son of Job HAMMOND, who was born about 1646. John HAMMOND was married to Catherine (or Kathryn) DOBYNS. Their son (there were most likely other children) was John HAMMOND, born 1721/22 in or near Richmond Co., VA and died at Cherokee Ponds, Edgefield Co., South Carolina in 1781. It is reported that his wife was Ann HIGHTOWER.

John HAMMOND and his wife, Ann HIGHTOWER, had two children (at least) that I know of, John and Joshua. I descend from Joshua. Joshua, born 1757 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, was married to his cousin, Sarah HAMMOND. I show at least four children to this marriage: Charles, Nancy, Joshua and Abner. I descend from the oldest, Charles, who was born 1793 in Cherokee Ponds, Edgefield District, South Carolina. Charles was married first to Martha Naomi MARTIN, and then second to Nancy JESTER. By Martha Naomi MARTIN, Charles had at least two children that I am aware of, Sarah Rebecca HAMMOND (who married William R. FULLERTON) and Samuel J. HAMMOND, from whom I am descended. By Nancy JESTER, Charles HAMMOND had three other children that I know of: Maurice Abner HAMMOND, Charles C. HAMMOND and Henry HAMMOND. Charles HAMMOND, husband of Martha Naomi MARTIN and later of Nancy JESTER, died in 1888 near Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia.

Samuel J. HAMMOND, son of Charles HAMMOND and Martha Naomi MARTIN, was born in 1822 in South Carolina and died in 1900 in Georgia, most likely Spalding County. He was married to Mary Ann MURDOCK (1824-1896). We have yet to learn anything substantial about the MURDOCK family. Samuel and Mary Ann had the following children: Charles Milas HAMMOND, Cynthia Elizabeth HAMMOND, James Taylor HAMMOND, Martha N. HAMMOND, Jessie "Josie" HAMMOND and Christopher Columbus HAMMOND. I descend from the oldest child, Charles Milas HAMMOND.

Charles Milas HAMMOND was born in 1849, most likely in Spalding County, Georgia, and died in 1922 in that same county. He was married to Roseller Amanda Clementine CRAWLEY (1850-1926). They had the following children: Ida Clementine, Jesse Franklin, Mary Elizabeth, James Thomas, Susie Pearl, Cleo and Ella Estelle. Mary Elizabeth HAMMOND was my Great Grandmother.

Mary Elizabeth HAMMOND was born in 1870 in Spalding County , Georgia, and died in 1948 also in Spalding County., Georgia. She was married to Walter Phlem COLEMAN (1869-1933). Walter and Mary Elizabeth had four children: Myrtice Idell, Annie Lee, Clara Lois, and Walter (my Grandfather). I am still looking to contact other HAMMOND researchers, especially those descended from Samuel J. HAMMOND or Charles Milas HAMMOND. I wish to offer particular thanks to cousins Vivian Westmoreland of Griffin, Georgia, and Jim Henderson, also of Griffin, Georgia, for the wonderful help and information they have provided me on the HAMMOND family.
